The rather late sunrise
meant that the early morning walk was done in total darkness. The sun didn't
make an appearance all day due to the cloud cover, so it stayed a bit dreary
and "cool". However, as they say, there's no such thing as bad
weather just poor choice of clothing.
After a hot breakfast and
rugged up like we were going to the snow, off we went on our bikes. The local
monthly markets were first. We love it when our stop coincides with a local
event. All handmade stuff, lots of arts and crafts, and homemade cakes, and we
decided we should support the local community by purchasing a couple (they were
quite delicious, but very sugary). Our
next mission was to find real coffee, which we accomplished at the redundant
Capitol cinema, built in 1926 and killed off by TV 50 years later. It had been
restored and converted into a great café-come-museum with lots of movie
memorabilia. And, we finally found a cafe which served vanilla slices!! Gotta
break out occasionally.
We then spent an interesting
hour or so wandering around the motorcycle museum which had some real classics.
Small world, at the museum Greg ran into a bloke (Brian) who he used to ride
motorbikes with a few years ago. He had moved from Torbanlea to Peterborough
because of his rail/motorcycle fascination and his diesel mechanic
qualifications. The architecture
of this place is amazing, more like Europe than Oz, so different to Qld, and
consequently we just enjoyed riding around town taking it all in. We returned
to the van for lunch and an LLD.
It was then back onto the
bikes for some grocery shopping in preparation for our next stop - Wilpena
Pound, Flinders Ranges. After dumping that in the van Wendy did some domestic
stuff while Greg rode around town on the bike for a while. It was then time for dinner; leftover
mornay and some reading. We've
both really enjoyed Peterborough with its lovely old buildings, great museums
and rather harsh windswept landscape.
